Behind The Scenes

The primary driver behind UT was a direct response to Quake III Arena. Epic Games focused heavily on bot AI that could simulate human like behavior. This was a stroke of genius, as it wasn't just for single player; the AI development helped the team optimize their networking code to an extreme degree. By building bots that could play competitively, they unintentionally created network packets that were significantly more stable for players with poor dial up connections.
