Overview

Set in the fantasy world of Britannia, the dark wizard Mondain attempted to trap the realm inside a crystal sphere. Though the Avatar shattered the crystal, each fragment retained a perfect mirror image of the world, creating the in universe explanation for separate game servers known as shards. Players create a custom avatar and enter this persistent landscape, completely free to choose their own destiny. You can build a grand fortress, hunt fearsome dragons in deep dungeons, forge weapons as a local blacksmith, or hunt down other players as a notorious criminal.

Behind The Scenes

The development of Ultima Online was a leap into uncharted engineering territory. The team had to build a server architecture capable of handling tens of thousands of concurrent connections and tracking thousands of persistent world items. Upon launch, the game suffered from a legendary design oversight where the dynamic virtual ecology completely collapsed within hours. Players slaughtered every virtual deer, wolf, and rabbit in the world far faster than the algorithm could respawn them, forcing the engineers to rapidly abandon the simulation for a hard-coded spawning model.
