Looking Glass Studios built the custom Dark Engine to compute real time, dynamic spatial acoustics and light maps. The game's pathfinding code calculated exactly how visible Garrett was based on light meter parameters on his interface. Audio programming assigned exact material properties like wood, stone, or metal to floors, forcing the engine to evaluate the noise level of every footstep and alert patrolling guards based on variable decibel thresholds.
