Dynamix programmed the custom Darkstar Engine to solve the massive networking hurdles of late 90s dial up internet tracking. They engineered a pioneering netcode architecture that utilized localized client side prediction loops to mask packet loss and connection lag. The game's pathfinding physics accidentally allowed players to slide down hills and preserve momentum a bug that players branded as skiing, which designers kept in the game to become its defining speed mechanic.
