Overview

You are Bitterman, a marine part of Operation Alien Overlord, a desperate counter offensive launched against the home planet of the Strogg. After most of your unit is decimated during the planetary drop, you must fight your way through fortified military bases, industrial refineries, and organic reconstruction facilities. Your ultimate objective is to dismantle the planetary defense grid and assassinate the Strogg leader, the Makron, to save Earth from systemic assimilation.

Behind The Scenes

Architecturally, id Software completely overhauled their tech stack by launching the id Tech 2 engine. Unlike the original Quake which relied heavily on software rendering patches, Quake II featured native, out of the box OpenGL support. This allowed the engine to showcase breathtaking dynamic colored lighting, real time particle explosions, and smooth filtered textures that successfully pushed enthusiasts to buy dedicated PCI 3D accelerators.
