Behind The Scenes

Westwood Studios explicitly refused to use hardware 3D graphics cards, as the early 3D accelerators could not handle the dark, cinematic environments they wanted to build. Instead, they engineered a custom software renderer that utilized voxels (three-dimensional pixels) to draw the character models over heavily compressed, cinematic pre-rendered backgrounds. This trick created incredible lighting and shadow detail that ran beautifully on standard CPU chips.
